Dissolution & Calcium Ion Release
Calcium sulphate hemihydrate ($CaSO_4 \cdot \frac{1}{2}H_2O$) hydrates to form a stable dihydrate matrix ($CaSO_4 \cdot 2H_2O$). Upon implantation into a bone defect, simple dissolution releases concentrated calcium ions ($Ca^{2+}$) into the local micro-environment. This transient hyper-calcic zone stimulates local cell signaling pathways, upregulating osteoblast precursor recruitment and alkaline phosphatase expression.
